It’s only recently that I’ve started learning about the vegan lifestyle. I recall first hearing about people who excluded, not only meat from their diets, but any animal by-products (so things like yogurt, eggs, ice cream and anything that had animal products or byproducts in it).
My first thoughts were, ” These people are extra. Is it that big of a deal to eat a biscuit that has milk and eggs in it?”
Well since then, thanks to Netflix and YouTube, I’ve been learning a little bit more about what it is go be vegan and why people choose a vegan diet or entire lifestyle. Another way I like to learn about new things is to talk to people one-on-one. Last week I got to chat with Martha M. who became a vegetarian in 2008 and then became vegan last year in 2015.
Martha shared that one of her challenges has been being the odd one out in family and cultural gatherings ( Martha is Zambian-Canadian) and in main vegan circles in her city as an African-Canadian.
Watch the clip below to hear about the beginnings of Martha’s vegan journey, the effects being vegan has had on her weight and her skin and one of her favorite foods.
